- Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Ph.D.), Chiba University, Japan (April 1991 – March 1994)
- Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chiba University, Japan (Oct 1988 – March 1991)
- Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honors), University of Dhaka, Bangladesh (June 1982 – Oct 1987)
- Higher Secondary Certificate, Notre Dame College (1981)
- Secondary School Certificate, Mohammadpur Government High School (1979)
- Dr. Chowdhury Faiz Hossain is a highly accomplished academic and researcher in pharmacy. He is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy at East West University.
-
- After graduating with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Dhaka University in 1987, he pursued his academic journey at the Chiba University of Japan. He obtained his Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences degrees in 1991 and 1994, respectively. During his doctoral studies, he made a significant discovery by identifying a series of novel small-molecule Natural-Products with selective monoamine-B inhibitory activity from a fungus, Monascas anka.
Prof. Hossain was awarded a prestigious fellowship from the Science and Technology Agency (STA) of the Japanese government in 1994 and placed at the National Institute of Health Science (NIHS) in Japan to complete his post-doctoral studies. Later in 1995, he was also awarded a Human Science Foundation post-doctoral fellowship for three years.
In 1996, he embarked on a teaching career as an Assistant Professor in the Pharmacy Department at Dhaka University, later being promoted to Associate Professor in 2000.
In the same year, he was invited to work as a Visiting Scientist at the National Center for Natural Products Research (NCNPR) of the University of Mississippi, USA, where he collaborated with well-renowned F.A.P. Barnard Distinguished Professor Alice M. Clark’s research group. During his tenure in the USA, Prof. Hossain made seminal contributions to federally funded anticancer research projects, pioneering the discovery and characterization of novel antitumor agents that effectively inhibit the hypoxia-inducible survival factor (HIF-1) in breast tumor cells. Dr. Hossain discovered a series of dineolignans, manassantins, from an aquatic plant as the most potent inhibitor of HIF-1α ever known to date.
Notably, he unveiled a potent series of dineolignans, manassantins, from an aquatic plant, marking an unparalleled advancement in HIF-1α inhibitor research. His research was underscored by two US patents and numerous peer-reviewed publications, with one receiving the Jack L. Beal Award by the American Society of Pharmacognosy for being the best manuscript published in 2004 in the flagship journal, the Journal of Natural Products.
After returning from the USA, Dr. Hossain joined Manarat International University as an Associate Professor and attained the rank of Professor within a short span. In January 2009, he joined East West University as a Professor. He has since served the university in various capacities, including as the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering, Chairperson of the Department of Pharmacy, and member of the Syndicate and the Academic Council.
In recognition of his outstanding academic research contributions, he received a Certificate of Excellence from East West University in 2009. Furthermore, he was honored with the Bangladesh Education Leadership Awards in 2019 for the Best Professor in Pharmacy Studies by the World Education Congress.
Prof. Hossain is currently working on natural-products-based drug discovery for non- alcoholic steatohepatitis from medicinal plants of Bangladesh. His contributions to new drug discovery and extensive research experience make him a respected figure in the field.
