The Department of English at East West University (EWU) successfully hosted a seminar on Thursday, September 19, 2024, as part of its ongoing Rhizome Seminar Series. The event took place at the S M Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery. The seminar featured a distinguished presentation by Professor Sabiha Huq, PhD, from the Department of English and Humanities at BRAC University.

The seminar’s theme was “Pre-Modern Muslim Women’s Literary History: Unfolding Multiple Territories,” based on Professor Huq’s recent monograph, “The Mughal Aviary: Women’s Writings in Pre-Modern India.” In her talk, Professor Huq delved into the rich literary heritage of pre-modern Muslim women in India, highlighting the significance of their writings for contemporary understanding of South Asian history and culture.

Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, the Chief Adviser and Founder Vice-Chancellor of EWU, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. His presence underscored the university’s commitment to fostering intellectual discourse and promoting scholarly research. The seminar provided a valuable platform for academic exchange and discussion, shedding light on the often-overlooked contributions of pre-modern Muslim women writers to the literary landscape.

A lively question and answer session was also held after Huq’s presentation. Professor Dr. Farzana Akhter, Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences of EWU, Dr. Akhter Jahan, Associate Professor and Chairperson, Department of English, EWU, were presented at the seminar.  A large number of faculty members and students of the Department of English have also been present on the occasion.
