EAST WEST UNIVERSITY ORGANIZES RESEARCH CONCLAVE 2022

The Department of Economics, East West University, organized its second international research conference, “Research Conclave 2022” on the 21st and 22nd of December 2022 in hybrid mode. The inaugural session was held on 21st December at the SM Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery. Professor Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan, the Vice Chancellor of East West University, inaugurated the conference highlighting the challenges of 4th industrial revolution ahead. Following the welcome speech of Dr. Biva Arani Mallik, Assistant Professor and Chairperson, Department of Economics, a panel discussion was held on “Drivers of Economic Development in Bangladesh.” With Professor Dr. A. K. Enamul Haque, Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics, East West University as the Moderator of the session, the keynote speakers were Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud, Former Member of the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh and Chairman of the Economic Research Group (ERG), Professor Mustafizur Rahman, Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), and Dr. Sajjad Zohir, Executive Director, Economic Research Group (ERG).

Dr. Sajjad Zohir pointed out the non-linear nature of development, and in this process, not all outcomes move in the same direction simultaneously. Referring to LDC graduation in 2026, Professor Mustafizur Rahman expressed his concerns regarding the competitiveness of Bangladesh and access to the international market. Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud emphasized the role of accountable and responsible institutional infrastructure in the country for the economic development of Bangladesh.

The two-day conference consisted of four important sessions on Environment and Economy, Gender and Health, Contemporary Issues: Education, Job Market, and COVID19 and Macroeconomics Issues: Growth, Development, and Migration. In addition to participants from EWU, researchers from other local and foreign universities also presented their papers in the conference.

Dr. Atonu Rabbani, Professor, Mushtaque Chowdhury Chair in Health and Poverty, BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health, Dr. Nazneen Ahmed, Country Economist, The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Dr. Abul H.M.G. Azam, Professor-cum-Advisor, Department of Business Administration, East West University, Dr. Mohammad Abdur Razzaque, Chairman, Research and Policy Integration for Development (RAPID) and Executive Director, Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI) graced the conclave with their presence and conducted their respective sessions as Chairs.

There were two plenary sessions in the conference. Dr. Sajjad Zohir spoke on “A Journey from ‘Chotoder’ to ‘Boroder’ Orthonitee O Rajnitee: Sharing Reflections with East West University Students.” In the second plenary session, Professor Dr. S. Madheswaran, Centre for Economic Studies and Policy, Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, India, spoke on “The Economic Value of Life.” The conclave ended on 22nd December with concluding remarks from Dr. Muhammad Ziaulhaq Mamun, Pro-Vice Chancellor of East West University.
