Department of Information Studies, East West University in collaboration with UNESCO Hosts Inaugural Meeting on Media and Information Literacy Network and Workshop on Digital Ecosystem Strategies

The Department of Information Studies, East West University successfully organized the inaugural team-building meeting for forming a network among leading public and private universities on Media and Information Literacy (MIL), followed by a workshop on Strategies for a Healthy Digital Ecosystem. The event, held on 22 June 2025 at East West University, brought together academics, experts, and students to address critical challenges in the digital age.
The Network formation session was chaired by Professor Shams Rahman, Honorable Vice Chancellor, East West University. Dr. Susan Vize, Head of Office, UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, Professor Dr. Dilara Begum, Chairperson, Department of Information Studies, East West University, Ms. Noore Jannat Proma, Communication and Information Officer, UNESCO Dhaka Office along with other faculty members graced the session with their presence.
The afternoon workshop focused on fostering a healthy digital ecosystem. Professor Dr. Saiful Alam discussed the consequence of misinformation, disinformation, and fake news in the digital era, while Professor Dr. Dilara Begum shared insights on Fact-Checking tools and techniques. Mr. Nadim Farhad, Peace & Development Officer, United Nations addressed strategies for mitigating hate speech and promoting respect.
Representatives from 15 universities and 1 UN Youth Advisory Group, including the University of Dhaka, Jahangirnagar University, BRAC University, North South University, East West University, University of Rajshahi, University of Chittagong, Independent University, Bangladesh, Jagannath University, Khulna University, Daffodil International University, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh, Noakhali Science and Technology University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology participated in the event. Their collective efforts were expected to foster institutional collaboration and support the integration of MIL into higher education curricula across the nation.
East West University is proud to be the first academic institution in Bangladesh to observe Global Media and Information Literacy (GMIL) Week, beginning in 2017. EWU has celebrated GMIL Week in collaboration with UNESCO, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to advancing MIL awareness and education throughout the country.
