Dec 11, 2025

The Department of Information Studies at East West University (EWU) hosted a seminar titled “Information Profession at a Crossroads: Future Prospects” on 10 December 2025, at the S.M. Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery. The event brought together faculty members, students, and information professionals to discuss the evolving landscape of the information profession in an era of rapid technological transformation.

EWU was honored to welcome Professor Emily Drabinski, Chair of the School of Information Studies at Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY), USA, as the Distinguished Speaker. Professor Drabinski delivered an engaging and thought-provoking lecture, highlighting emerging global trends, professional challenges, and future directions for information professionals in the digital age. Professor Dr. Dilara Begum, Chairperson of the Department of Information Studies, delivered the welcoming remarks, expressing gratitude to the distinguished guests and emphasizing the department’s commitment to academic excellence and active engagement with information institutions.

The seminar featured an interactive Q & A session, during which attendees engaged with Professor Drabinski on a range of critical and timely issues. Participants raised questions about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in information institutions, the challenges and ethical concerns associated with AI integration, and how information professionals can effectively navigate, manage, and respond to these emerging technological disruptions.

The event concluded with closing remarks from Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of East West University, who praised the seminar’s intellectual contributions and encouraged students to dream beyond traditional roles. He expressed his inspiration to see future graduates of Information Studies become strategic leaders and innovators in the corporate, academic, and technological sectors. He further emphasized the importance of strategically implementing information and the pivotal role that information professionals play in decision-making, organizational growth, and societal development.

The seminar marks the beginning of a series of academic engagements with Professor Drabinski in Bangladesh. During her visit from 9th to 15th December 2025, she will participate in library visits, guest lectures, and workshops at East West University, strengthening collaboration between international scholars and Bangladeshi information professionals. These activities reflect the shared commitment to fostering dialogue on the future of the Library and Information
Science (LIS) field.
