East West University Commemorates International Mother Language Day with Solemnity and Respect

Feb 21, 2026

East West University (EWU) observed ‘Shaheed Day’ and International Mother Language Day with profound solemnity, paying tribute to the martyrs of the historic 1952 Language Movement. The day’s programs were designed to honor the legacy of those who sacrificed their lives to establish Bangla as the state language, a movement that served as the cornerstone for the eventual independence of Bangladesh.

The commemoration began in the early hours of the 21st February 2026 morning with a "Provat Fery" rally through the Aftabnagar area. Participants, including members of the university administration, faculty, and students, marched in a disciplined procession to mark the occasion. Following the rally, a floral wreath-laying ceremony took place at the university’s own ‘Shaheed Minar’ on campus. Wreaths were placed in a gesture of deep respect by the Board of Trustees, University Administration, and various academic departments and student clubs.

The event was graced by the presence of Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and founder Vice Chancellor of EWU. He was joined by Board of Trustees members Dr. Muhammad A. Mannan, Mr. Nowshad Shamsul Arefin, and Mr. Mansoor Mumin. Also in attendance were Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor; Professor Dr. M. Ashik Mosaddik, Pro-Vice Chancellor; and Air Cdre (Retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer. The ceremony also saw a large gathering of Deans, the Registrar, faculty members, officials, staff, and a significant number of students, all united in their commitment to upholding the spirit of the mother tongue and the heritage of the nation.
