East West University Celebrates its 23rd Convocation

The 23rd Convocation of East West University (EWU) was held on 28 February 2024 at Aftabnagar Sports Ground in the capital. Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury MP, as the representative of His Excellency, The President, awarded degrees to 2861 students of undergraduate and graduate programs at the convocation. Moreover, four students with exceptional talent were honored with gold medals.
On this occasion, Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, the Chief Adviser of EWU and the former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, highlighted the contribution of EWU to the country’s higher education sector and urged the government to grant permission for the initiation of MPhil and PhD programs. Later, Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury MP stated that the government does not discriminate between public and private universities. Some private universities like EWU have reached such a standard that the time has arrived for them to offer PhD and MPhil degrees. He urged Bangladeshi universities to produce graduates with values, soft skills and knowledge so that they can work anywhere in the world. The Education Minister added that the government has taken initiatives to enhance work opportunities for future graduates.
The convocation speaker, Professor Alan McKinnon of Kühne Logistics University, Germany opined that countries like Bangladesh are the worst victims of “climate injustice”. He highlighted the necessity of equipping graduates with knowledge and skills in supply chain management to deal with the global environmental challenges they face.
Syed Manzur Elahi, Chairperson, Board of Trustees of EWU and former Adviser to the Caretaker Government, Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, the Chief Adviser of EWU and the former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, and Professor Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor EWU, have also delivered insightful speeches during the event.
Addressing the new graduates, Syed Manzur Elahi said that a person’s problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills and range of innovative abilities determine their successful career in today’s world and that graduates must come forward and contribute to making a better world.
In his speech, Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin said that from the very beginning, EWU has emphasized entrepreneurship. In the 21st century, the invention and implementation of artificial intelligence, and the use of robotics and machine learning are leading the world towards the 5th Industrial Revolution. We are planning to offer programs in the above-mentioned areas, blockchain, and climate change soon. In this way, EWU is expected to become one of the leading higher educational institutions in the Asia Pacific region by 2030.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Shams Rahman emphasized East West University's commitment to fostering a harmonious blend of education and research through the implementation of modern curricula. He urged graduates to actively engage and make constructive contributions to this educational and research initiative.
Among others in the convocation program were the members of the Board of Trustees, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Treasurer, Deans, Registrar, faculty members, officers, staff, graduates, and their parents. The students were delighted to receive their degrees within the expected timeframe.
