EWUCRT Hosts Seminar on Globalization and Societal Change Among the Santal Community in Northern Bangladesh

The East West University Center for Research and Training (EWUCRT) organized a research seminar on 29 January 2026 titled “Ethnicity, Globalization and Change: An Exploratory Study among Santals in Northern Bangladesh” held at the EWUCRT Seminar Room in the University. The research was presented by a distinguished team from the Department of Sociology at East West University (EWU), including Ruma Parvin and Manzuma Ahsan, both Senior Lecturers. Professor Dr. Fouzia Mannan, a co-researcher from the same department, was also in attendance to provide further context on the study's framework.
The seminar was chaired by Professor Dr. Shams Rahman, Vice Chancellor of EWU. The session featured an in-depth critique and analysis from Dr. Debasish Kumar Kundu, Associate Professor of the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka, who served as the Key Discussant.
The proceedings commenced with welcome remarks from Professor Dr. Sohel Rana, Executive Director of EWUCRT. Notable dignitaries in attendance included Professor Dr. M. Ashik Mosaddik, Pro-Vice Chancellor, and Air Cdre (Retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer of EWU. Their presence underscored the university's prioritization of high-level academic research.
The presentation explored the impact of globalization on the cultural identity, traditional livelihoods, and social structures of the Santal people. Following the presentation, the seminar concluded with a vibrant Q&A session. Faculty members and EWUCRT officials engaged in a deep dialogue regarding the findings, discussing the policy implications and the need for further longitudinal studies on ethnic minorities in the region.
