International Symposium on “Student Satisfaction and Quality of Higher Education” on 19 June 2021

Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of East West University (EWU) organized and successfully completed a day long international symposium webinar on “Student Satisfaction and Quality of Higher Education”, which was held on Saturday, 19 June 2021. Dr. Dipu Moni, MP, Hon’ble Education Minister graced the inaugural session as the chief guest, while Professor Dr. Kazi Shahidullah, Chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, and Professor Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan, Vice Chancellor of East West University were present in the event as the special guest. Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Founder Member, Board of Trustees, Chief Adviser and Founder Vice Chancellor of EWU chaired the program. Professor Dr. Muhammad Ziaulhaq Mamun, Pro-Vice Chancellor, East West University, started the occasion with his welcome speech. The Pro-Vice Chancellor also thanked the Director of IQAC to organizing for such kind of symposium.

Hon’ble education minister Dr. Dipu Moni, MP, inaugurated the symposium webinar and said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman formed Kudrat-i-Khuda Education Commission for higher Education. She urged East West University and all tertiary institutions in the country to take the call to both applied and fundamental research seriously and find innovative and effective ways of linking up with the industry, the corporate world, and academics in universities abroad to engage in quality, strategic research, targeted at finding practical solutions to real life problems in our society and thereby actualize research findings to develop our society. She also said quality does not only mean technology, a good degree, good environment, quality teachers but also the receiver must be satisfied. She gave thanks to East West University to organize this symposium.

Professor Dr. Kazi Shahidullah, Chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh said that today’s student is more independent, the issue of the student satisfaction is very important. The education sector needs to change and adapt as well. He also said the university administration will give new important to this important issue to the student’s satisfaction.

The world-renowned distinguished Prof. CHUI Wing Hong Eric, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Dean of Students, City University of Hong Kong, and Dr. Cecilia K Y Chan, Associate Professor, Academic Unit of Social Contexts and Policies of Education, Faculty of Education and Assistant Director of CETL, The University of Hong Kong shared their expertise knowledge about the student satisfaction and quality of higher education based on their university experiences. Professor Dr. Sanjoy Kumar Adhikary, Member, Bangladesh Accreditation Council briefly presented quality education and student satisfaction on the context of the public and private universities of Bangladesh.  

Three groups of distinguished speakers from East West University presented papers on different aspects of student satisfaction and quality assurance of higher education in the symposiumDr. A. M. Tanvir Hussain, Associate Professor and his team members Jeenat Mehareen, Senior Lecturer, Estiaque Bari, Senior Lecturer, and Umee Marzana, Lecturer, Dept. of Economics presented a research paper on “The Influence of University Image in Alumni’s Expectations and Satisfaction”. Professor Dr. Khairul Alam,  Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Dr. Mohammad Rezwanul Huq, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Dr. Reatul Karim, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Pharmacy provided a brief idea about “Student Expectations and Experiences in Higher Education” and Dr. Abdul Momen, Assistant Professor, Department of Business Administration, Dr. Akhter Jahan,  Assistant Professor, Department of English, Shahriar Khandaker  Senior Lecturer, Department of Social Relations focused on the topic “Service Quality Dimensions and Student Satisfaction in Higher Education (HE) in Bangladesh”. In their presentation, they briefly highlighted the different aspects of student satisfaction and quality assurance of higher education, the holistic education system, the influence of university image in alumni’s expectations and satisfaction, factors of student’s expectation, the service quality dimension and student satisfaction based on the survey results.

The reputed academicians and distinguished Professor Dr. A. K. Enamul Haque, Dept. of Economics, and Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics, EWU; Professor Dr. Anisul Haque, Dept. of EEE, EWU; Professor Dr. A.F.M. Saiful Amin, Department of Civil Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Professor Dr. Arshad M. Chowdhury, Dean, School of Engineering, BRAC University, Bangladesh chaired the technical sessions.

The junior faculty members of EWU, Ms. Monisha Biswas, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of English, Mr. Md. Shazed Ul Hoq Khan Abir, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of English, Mr. Ariful Islam, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of English; Mr. Shahnaz Ameer, Lecturer, Dept. of English; Ms. Naushin Nazifa Islam, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of English; Mr. Refat Bin Reza Rafi, Lecturer, Dept. of English; Ms. Saiyeeda Saniya Munim, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Economics, Ms. Sarah Enamul Haque, Lecturer, Dept. of Economics, Mr. Reaz Hafiz, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Business Administration; Ms. Nusrat Jahan Ananna, Lecturer, Dept. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering; Ms. Najneen Ahmed, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Pharmacy; Ms. Rubayat Kabir, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Social Relations; Mr. Md. Mohsin Uddin, Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, Mr. Jesan Ahammed Ovi, Lecturer, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering acted as rapporteurs and assisted the session chairs to accumulate the questions and recommendations raised by the participants in the session.

The symposium was anchored by Dr. Farhana Ferdousi, Chairperson, Dept. of Business Administration of EWU.

Under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor and with guidance from Pro-Vice Chancellor, the symposium was organized by IQAC with outstanding contribution of Mr. Mashfiqur Rahman, Registrar, Mr. Mohammad Eklas Uddin, FCA, Director of Finance, B.E.M. Manjur-E-Khuda, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Dr. Md. Rezwanul Huq, Associate Professor, Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering for their assistance.

The webinar was digitally managed and done excellently using Zoom Video Webinar where the Information and Communication Services (ICS) team played an instrumental role under the leadership of B.E.M. Manjur-E-Khuda, CTO, who acted as the digital host as well for the entire program and Mr. SM Mohiuddin, Public Relations Officer has also helped with both electronic and print media coverage on the symposium.

The symposium was very successful as praised by the participants. The Honorable Vice Chancellors and Directors of IQAC from different private and public universities, faculty members and officers of EWU were actively participated in the symposium. Participants share their positive feedback to the IQAC for arranging such a helpful symposium program.

Professor Dr. Basanta Kumar Barmon, Director of IQAC, convener and moderator of the international symposium webinar gave concluding remarks on the event.
