National Center for State Courts (NCSC) and East West University jointly organizes a Learning Session on Legal Aid

Increasing Access to Justice in Bangladesh Program of National Center for State Courts (NCSC) and Department of Law, East West University jointly organized a learning session titled “Understanding of Legal Aid Services Act, 2000: Representation Needs of Indigent People” on 31st October, 2020 to create knowledge among the law students about Legal Aid Services. The session was supported by U.S. Department of State.
The session was conducted through the online platform Zoom Meeting. Thirty participants from the Department of Law, East West University have been selected for this session. The faculty members of the Department of Law, East West University also attended the session.
Mr. Saud Hassan, Additional District and Sessions Judge, Tangail delivered the keynote speech where he outlined the provisions of Legal Aid Services Act, 2000 and shared the practical knowledge from his work experiences.
Mr. Saud Hassan mainly shed light upon the Legal Aid Services Act, 2000 and its application in the criminal justice system of Bangladesh He pointed out various shortcomings of the District, Upazilla, Union and Special Committees established under the Act. He further mentioned the outcome of insufficient manpower and necessary equipment in the institutional framework behind legal aid in our country.
Ms. Sharmeen Farouk, Chief of Party of Increasing Access to Justice in Bangladesh Program made opening remarks in this session.
Dr. Md. Mehedi Hasan, Chairperson & Assistant Professor, Department of Law, East West University graced the program with his presence. Sayeed Hossain Sarwar, Lecturer, Department of Law, East West University, concluded the session with appreciation to the keynote speaker and Ms. Sharmeen Farouk for their valuable time and efforts and all the participants to make the session a successful one.
