Webinar on “Resisting Disinfodemic: Media and Information Literacy for everyone and by everyone”

The Department of Information Studies and Library Management, East West University as part of the week-long programs to celebrate the Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2020 organized a webinar on the theme “Resisting Disinfodemic: Media and Information Literacy for everyone and by everyone" on 31 October 2020.  The webinar was dedicated to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as a part of celebrating his birth centenary. 

 The Guest Speakers of the webinar were Dr. M Aslam Alam, Chairman, Bangladesh Institute for Information Literacy and Sustainable Development & Former Senior Secretary to the Government of Bangladesh and Professor Dr. Jagtar Singh, Former Dean, Faculty of Education and Information Science, Punjabi University, Patiala, India. Dr. Dilara Begum, Associate Professor and Chairperson department of Information Studies and Library Management chaired the webinar.

At the onset of the webinar, the Guest Speakers and the Program Chair released a Souvenir that was published on the occasion of observing the eighth annual Global MIL Week 2020. Numerous write ups were received for the souvenir including messages from distinguished academics and information professionals from all around the world. The souvenir and other event related information is available on the website created by the organizers.

The eminent Guest Speakers discussed the theme of the webinar.  The Speakers focused their discussion on disinfodemic, its effect on our daily lives, how to fight the disinfodemic, what are the roles of youth in mitigating disinformation, as well as what are their organisations doing for the society regarding Media and Information Literacy. Around 100 participants viewed the live webinar from the official Facebook page of the department. The viewers shared their opinions, views and queries in the comments section. The participation of the audiences made the webinar lively and interactive.

The webinar concluded with remarks from the program Chair Dr. Dilara Begum highlighting background of the celebrations, and the activities that have been organized this year for celebrating the global MIL Week 2020. She also thanked the audience and the Speakers for their engaging participation. The winners of the Quiz Competition were also honoured at the end of the webinar.
